What to Buy in March to Save Money

If you’re headed to the grocery store in March, you’ll want to grab your coupon binder! It's the perfect time of year to fill your freezer with frozen food items and stock up on pantry staples like cereal and snacks, plus there are always coupons for these items to make the savings even better.

This month is National Frozen Food month so there will be awesome deals on frozen foods all month long. March Madness for basketball also happens this month so there will be sales on snack foods and other game day essentials.

The money-saving doesn't stop there, as you will also find deals and sales on select home items, personal care items, and clothing. March is a great month to stock up and grab essentials while saving money.

What to Buy in March to Save Money

Saint Patrick’s Day is in March which means that you’ll find great prices on things related to it and since the weather is starting to warm up, you’ll begin to see winter clothing being heavily marked down.

Food Stuff to Buy in March

March Madness

March Madness means that things such as soda, chips, fruit and veggie trays as well as paper products like plates and cups will be on sale in anticipation for game day parties. Use these sales to your advantage to build your stockpile.

St. Patrick's Day Foods

Saint Patrick’s Day is this month too so anything St. Paddy’s day party related will be on sale too. Corned Beef, eggs, ham, cabbage, and decorations will be marked down. Buy what you need for your own party before the holiday. For decorations, it may be cheaper to wait until after to stock up.

Cereal

Post Cereals are also put on sale in March. The best part about this is that there are usually coupons to stack with the sales. Use the sales and the coupons to your advantage and build your cereal stockpile.

National Frozen Food Month

As I said, March is National Frozen Food month so items like chicken nuggets, fries, frozen breakfast sandwiches, T.V. dinners, and ice cream will be on sale. If you have a deep freeze or space in your kitchen freezer, now is the time to stock up! These are usually some of the best prices of the year!

Seasonal Produce

It's almost always cheaper to by produce in season, but this varies a little depending on your area. We can't grow anything outside during the cold winter months, so I like to use a couple of seasonal produce guides saved to help plan my meals.

These are some of the fruits and veggies that are considered in season across the country. Take advantage of lower prices to enjoy some of your favorites.

Mushrooms, onions, oranges, peas, spinach, and tangerines can all be dehydrated or canned to extend their shelf life. You can also freeze many of these at home if you have the freezer space. Pick them up now and preserve them so that you won’t have to pay full price when you need them.

Non-Food Items on Sale

Deep Freezers

This one goes in line with food, but also in line with non food items that are on sale in march. Many times you will see grocery store sales that have you buy a deep freezer and then you get even more savings. Depending on the store depends on the sale, but a few years ago I bought a deep freezer for $100 and included was $200 worth the free frozen food coupons. So it is a good idea to keep an eye out for sales in the grocery stores. It is also the cheapest time to buy deep freezers in general, so if you need one March is the time to get one.

Gardening Sales

Sales on gardening tools will begin this month as well. Items like actual gardening tools, mulch, fertilizer, and seeds make getting your spring garden off to a great start very easy. Stock up on what you can and worry about the rest later.

Winter Weather

Finally, as the weather continues to warm up, winter items will continue to be marked down. Snow boots, snow shovels, hats, mittens and gloves, scarves, rock salt and more will all be marked down this month. During March you may see markdown prices as high as 70% off.

If you wait until April, you may be able to get a larger discount, but keep in mind that store stocks will be significantly depleted if you wait. Keep that in mind when making the decision of when to purchase these items.

March is a great month to start building a stockpile if you don't have one yet since freezer and pantry items are on sale that will save you a lot of money in the long run. Stocking up on the things you will use over the months until another sale comes around for those items is important in keeping your costs down overall. Grabbing these items at the lowest prices during the month of March will help you stay on track with your budget and give you the biggest stretch with your money.
